HOCLOOP project kicked-off at VITO in Belgium

This Research and Innovation Action, part of the HORIZON-CL5-2021-D3-03 Call, is set to pioneer an innovative, horizontal closed-loop solution for extracting heat from both deep and shallow rock formations. Departing from conventional geothermal well construction, the technology will leverage new drilling concepts, unlocking extended reach and larger hole sizes for horizontal drilling, ultimately enhancing power production. The project aims to develop tools for testing the proposed geothermal solution. It will culminate in a full-scale test operation at TRL5, showcasing the viability and scalability of the technology.

In parallel, HOCLOOP’s Consortium will work on developing and validating models for heat flow, exploring the use of alternative fluids to water for improved electricity production. The project ambitiously covers the identification of potential EU pilot sites, environmental assessments, and delves into societal acceptance for this novel geothermal energy exploitation technology.

We are thoroughly grateful to VITO for the great organization, and for hosting the kick-off for all the partners during our two-days event.

The project will be coordinated by Carlos Escudero-Oñate , Head of EU Affairs and Business Development at IFE.
